When the first Doctor arrived on earth he was well into his first incarnation. He Had fled his home planet having many adventures before finally landing on Earth in the 1960's. This 1st Doctor suffered quite badly in London's polluted atmosphere, coughing and wheezing. He also seemed quite frail but despite this, his intelligence remained undiminished as did his curiosity. However he was arrogant and at times vindictive.
Two School teachers (Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright confronted the Doctor over the disappearanc of one of their pupils Susan Forman. As they argued her voice called out from within ta nearby Police Box. Ian & Barbara forced their way past the Doctor and entered the Police box only to find themselves inside a huge chamber. They attempted to escape but the Doctor locked the doors and laughed as they panicked, refusing to free them. He remained hostile and aggressive but possibly defensive. His overiding concern was for himself and his granddaughter Susan. He told tthe Teachers that he and Susan were exiles but claimed whistfully that one day they would get back.
The Doctor was highly suspicious of Ian and Barbara and accused them of sabotage as the ship hurtled out of control to the dawn of time and the edge of destruction for both the Tardis and it's occupats. As it turned out there was a fault with the fast return switch. It had got stuck as the Doctor tried to return to 1963. With this discovery the Doctor is forced to face up to some home truths. He apologised to Barabara for his behaviour to both her and Ian. She accepted his apology and their relationship began to thaw. They no longer became unwilling captives but fellow companions.
He began to mellow and his relationship with his companions improved as a result. A lighter side to his nature began to surface as he continued his travels. It became apparent that he had a passion and strong
sense of morality. He risked his life to fight tyranny and
oppression where ever he found it. Risking his life to save others.
His travels were not without tragedy with two of his companions
meeting violent deaths. Katarina, a young handmaiden to the
prophetess Cassandra, and Sara Kingdom, a Space Security Service
Agent were both killed during their time with the Doctor After a
particularly harrowing fight against the Cybermen he collapsed in
the console room of his Tardis.
At first it seemed that it was all over, but then something strange and wonderful took place. The lights in the console room brightened along with the Doctor’s features. As the process continued his body disappeared in a blaze of light. When the light began to fade, a new body lay in place of tthe old. The Doctor had regenerated..
