The the tenth Doctor's first words were "Hello" followed by a big toothy grinas he emerged from his 9th regeneration . The grin is something of a trademark for the 10th Doctor as he embraces his new life free from the pain and guilt of his last one. He is a flamboyant character energetic, relishing his new hair and teeth ! Yet beyond this is a man of many years and centuries.

His experiences have made him less tolorant of others setting himself up as judge jury and executioner as he sees fit. As the Sycorax leader attempts to kill the Doctor after losing a duel, the Doctor caused him to fall to his death. "No second chances" said the Doctor, something the Prime Minister also discovers as he brings down her premiership with just six words. A vote of no confidence is later carried out against her and it seemed she was the second person to fall before this new Doctor's judgement.

His apparent disregard for the consquences of his actions ( an attitude reflected by Rose) is challenged by Queen Victoria who infoms them they are not welcome in the British Empire and suggested that they reflect on how they came to stray so far from all that is good. They are to be banished never to return. This shocked the Doctor and for once it was he who was judged to be unworthy and not some alien invader or soon to be ex Prime Minister.

The surprises and challenges continued when he caught sight of an old friend and companion- Sarah Jane Smith. When Rose and the Doctor find themselves alone she demanded to know if she would just be the latest in a long line. He denied she would be but Rose is not satisfied. It is then that the extent of the Doctors loneliness is revealed. He explained that she can travel with him for the rest of her life. But not he with her. He will regenerate as she ages and dies. He will then have to go on alone. He says "imagine having to watch someone you"... but overcome with emotion he can't go on.So this is a Doctor with passion, energy and humour but in the end he's always the lonely Timelord.
