The 2nd Doctor

following his 1st regeneration, this 2nd incarnation was a more laid back persona. He took to playing the recorder and appeared to be something of a clown. At first he was the object of suspicion as his companions, Ben and Polly, found it hard to accept this strange little character who danced little jigs and dressed up in outrageous clothing (he once disguised himself as an old washer woman) This Doctor was a gentler character than his predecessor, no longer so short tempered. Although the Doctor continued to be on the run from his own people, this didn't seem to concern him, he certainly never mentioned returning to his own people, claimed to be bored with their lifestyle and preferred to explore the universe.

He was a more elusive character, preferring at times to let others take the lead while he worked quietly in the background. Once, when challenged by a member of a scientific expedition, he replied tthat he had his own special methods... "Keeping my eyes open and my mouth shut!"

He still retained the sharp mind and wit of his former self, and although he appeared to be somewhat younger, it must be remembered that this Doctor was an older and more experienced ttraveller in this incarnation. The Doctor was frequently underestimated by his enemies as they discovered to their cost. Despite their apparent superior forces, his intelligence and ability to improvise assisted him in defeating his foes on a number of occasions. His myriad skills were not jjust used to defeat his enemies, but also to aid his friends and allies. He was less authoritarian, preferring to encourage his companions to make their own discoveries.

Events finally came to a head between the Doctor and the Timelords when, having once again defeated his enemies, he turned to his people for help in returning a great number of individuals who had been abducted from their own times and places. For once even the Doctorwas out of his depth. or perhaps life on the run had lost it's appeal and he felt a need to resolve things once and for all. Whatever his reasons, the Doctor's days as a renegade were over. He was placed on trial and accused of repeatedly breaking the rules of non interference and for the theft of a TARDIS. The Doctor in turn accuseed the Timelords of refusing to use their powers to aid those in need. The Timelords, having spent some time debating the issue, came to accept that there is evil in the universe and that it must be fought. They also agreed that the Doctor had a part to play in this fight. even so there was a price to be paid for his crimes. Heiwas to be parted from his companions (who would be returned to a time just after their first adventure with him) and he was to be exiled to Earth. In addition he would be forced to regenerate for a second time...
