As the Doctor lay lifeless on the morgue slab awaiting an autopsy; lightning flashed around his body with his skeleton exposed each time. His face contorted, rippled and changed. The 8th Doctor was born. This new Doctor laid unconscious his breath rising silently in the cold air. His eyes suddenly opened and he sat bolt upright, fully conscious.
After forcing his way out of his temporary tomb the Doctor wandered the corridors of the Hospital in a confused and dazed state. After wandering into a deserted and somewhat derelict ward he accidentally knocked over some mirrored cabinets. The Doctor cried out in alarm; shying away from the remnants of the mirrorsas thunder and lightning illuminated his face. He dropped to his knees and cried out "Who am I?!" to an empty room but his only answer was another crash of thunder outside.
The Doctor slowly regained much of his memory during the days that followed. He remembered the surgeon who operated on him and found her as she headed for the car park. Despite her initial disbelief she gradually came to accept that this was the same man she had operated on during New Year Eve. As the Doctor and Grace got to know each other he let slip his knowledge of people and places long since dead. He also went on to predict the future of those around him casually letting slip knowledge and information that his former self would never have considered doing.
He was much less secretive and had no qualms regarding self revelation. The Doctor openly stated that he was in fact half human. This Doctor wore his feelings on his sleeve and had a deep empathy with others. He spoke of holding back death and told Grace that it was a childhood dream of hers which was why she became a Doctor. The Doctor was impulsive and passionate, deeply caring and romantic. He was more at ease with himself and with those around him.
The final days of the 8th Doctor remain unclear but it would appear
that there was some great war between the Daleks and the Time Lords that swept through space and time and. In order to prevent the Daleks gaining mastery over space and Time; the Doctor was forced to wipe out the Time lords of Gallifrey along with the Daleks. It would seem that he was mortally wounded by this conflict and was forced to regenerate to save himself.
