The 9th Doctor appeared on earth during the early years of the 21st Century and saved a young woman, Rose Tyler, from an attack by the Nestene consciousness. He had a strong Lancashire accent and crackled with energy. He seemed to be enjoying himself immensely relishing the challenge that the conflict with the Nestene brought. He had a zest for live savouring every moment

IThe Doctor claimed he preferred to work alone and rejected Rose's demands to join him. She persisted and the two became good friends. The 9th Doctor was clearly emotionally wounded by the experiences of the time war and the loss of his home planet and people. He felt guilt and sorrow at the suffering it caused other races caught up in the devastation. despite this he would display a childlike wonder at the universe and all its many and varied life forms. Perhaps this was a mask to cover the pain he felt at the loss of his people.

He had a tendency towards mood swings. Grinning like a loon one moment then throwing insults ("stupid apes") around the next the next. There was a ruthless edge to his nature which we last saw during his 7th incarnation. It emerged when confronted by a surviving Dalek. His hatred and anger spilled out when he tried to electrocute the creature within. It took Rose's challenge to him that caused the Doctor assess his behaviour and attitudes and look at his old enemy in a new light.

His bravery and self sacrifice shone through as he sent Rose back home as he worked to destroy the Daleks at the cost of his own life. This aspect of his nature was reflected in Rose when she returned in the Tardis to save him. Her own life was slowly being eaten away by the time vortex as iit surged through her and throughout time and space. In a final act of self sacrifice the Doctor took tthe vortex from her and effectively ended his life to safe hers.

As he set the controls of the console he noticed his hand glow. He knew that he didn't have much ttime left and tried to explain the concept of regeneration to rose. He went on to say that she was fantastic .. "and you know what? So was I" Then the Doctor exploded into a blaze of golden light. His features changed heralding the birth of 10th Doctor.
